FASHION SHOW: "A WORK OF ART"

Each year, Ames High School prepares and hosts a fashion show in the spring. Once again, the time has rolled around for the show to be held, and it will certainly be a worthy spectacle this year. The theme is “A Work of Art” and is accompanied by appropriate decorations, including massive picture frames.
“We chose [our theme] because we wanted to have a fusion of vintage and modern vibe this year. We decided on using gold art frames as our main theme to showcase the simplistic, modern, yet classic beauty of the designs this year,” says senior co-chair Melanie Chang.
Seniors Melanie Chang and Rachel Shriver are the two that were chosen to spearhead this event, and they seem to have a done a good job directing it thus far. They’ve been hard at work getting together the decorations and organizing models, while all of the designers have been busy sewing and crafting intricate new outfits to display.
“There have been a number of new designers [this year], so I’m eager to see what they have to offer in the show,” says Chang. Although the show has been lucky enough to have a number of returning designers, the new competition really spices it up this year. “I’ve never been involved in the fashion show before this year, but I really threw myself into it by designing for eight models,” says senior designer Sydni Heron. “I probably spent an hour to three hours on each outfit... It’s harder work than I expected it to be, but it was well worth the effort.”
Don’t let her make it sound easy, though. “Renee [Chang] and I have spent around 50 hours working on our 5 outfits,” says senior designer Vera Zhao. “We made them all from scratch, even the accessories, so it took a while.”
Though the time spent on making outfits varies dramatically from designer to designer, in the end, the outcome is the same. “I’m really excited to see everyone’s designs and see how this show will be different from past shows,” says senior designer Katrina Henderson.
Though designing is essential to the show, it would be nowhere without its determined models. However, even if someone has stage fright, it’s hard to tell- the confidence radiating from them is unbeatable. “Although it’s only five minutes on the runway, the adrenaline high is amazing,” says Zhao.
The fashion show, held this year on March 29th at 7 p.m., is known to be a great spectacle, and the more people that show up to encourage the designers and models, the better. The diversity of the original outfits is always worth the $3 it costs to get in. “I love seeing the colorful, beautiful and unique outfits all of the models are strutting in,” says Heron. “It’s like walking into a copy of Vogue.”
