Talent flows through the hallways of Ames High, with many students involved in music extracurricular activities. Throughout the year, students’ talents are highlighted to the rest of the Ames High community with dozens of concerts, plays, and other performances. This week, students have the opportunity to see the orchestras play on Thursday in the auditorium under the direction of Ames High orchestra director Mary Kay Polashek and middle school directors Andrew Weihrauch and Peggy Dieter.
The concert features three different orchestras. The seventh and eighth grade string orchestra will perform Two Guitars, Ashokan Farewell, and Highridge Overture. The ninth grade orchestra will follow with Corelli Concerto Grosso, Sabre Dance, and Dream in D by Ames High junior Daniel DeLay (who is a member of the symphonic orchestra). The Ames High Symphonic Orchestra, featuring woodwind, brass, string, and percussion instruments, will round out the evening with a four-piece selection, including Winter Wonderland, Spanish Dance from the Nutcracker, and Bounty Hunter.
“I love orchestra,” senior Bryan Graveline said. “Everyone should come out to our concert. You’ll be very impressed. Also Ryan Park will be there, so you know you have to go.”
The evening features a special musical surprise for audience members: Emil Polashek, Mrs. Polashek’s husband, and Peggy Dieter have prepared a vocal duet to selections from the musical Camelot. The 10-12 Symphonic Orchestra will accompany Polashek and Dieter’s vocal performance.
“It should be a great night,” junior Bekah May said.
Show your support for young musicians like Bryan and Bekah on Thursday, January 26th at 7:30 P.M. in the Ames High auditorium.
