The poison control center
Des Moines band The Poison Control Center was founded by current lead singer and guitarist Patrick Tape Fleming, who moved to Ames in 1999 and formed the band as a way to make new friends. The band's current lineup of Devin Frank, David Olson, Joe Terry, and Fleming have been enormously successful and were featured in Pitchfork.com's list of "artists to watch" in 2011. They have played at 80/35 three times since the festival's 2007 founding and they embarked on a national tour in the summer of 2011 to promote their fifth album Stranger Ballet. Earlier this year, they released "A Nice Old Fashioned Romance With Love Lyrics & Everything," a vinyl record of their earliest music, through Maximum Ames Records. Along with The Envy Corps, the Poison Control Center is Iowa's music representative to the United States and one of the most recognizable names to come out of Ames in the past decade.
