Every year, the Ames High bands hold a concert for friends and families in the winter, which will be held this Thursday. All three school bands spend a number of months preparing and rehearsing their music. This year, the symphonic band will be playing a selection including works such as "Shadow Rituals" by Michael Markowski, the concert band will be playing songs like "Northwest Rising" by Robert Sheldon, and the freshman band will be performing works such as "Morning in Madrid" by Bill Calhoun.
Band members dedicate one period a day and much of their free time to practice these songs in order to sound great at the concerts. Chris Ewan leads the symphonic band, while Andrew Buttermore leads the other two in orchestrating the selections.
All bands spend a few days at the beginning of their time together practicing different pieces and finding out how well they sound together before deciding on which songs to play.
This winter concert starts at 7:30 pm in the AHS auditorium and costs $3 for students and $5 for adults.
